To run Copilot, users need macOS 14.0 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer). Initially, the app is available in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans for a broader rollout.

By bringing Copilot to macOS, Microsoft aims to enhance productivity and creativity, offering Mac users a powerful AI companion for work, learning, and everyday tasks.

Microsoft has announced that it will retire Skype on May 5, 2025, concluding over two decades of service in internet communications. Launched in 2003, Skype was a pioneer in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, enabling users worldwide to make voice and video calls over the internet. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, aiming to integrate its capabilities into its suite of services.

In recent years, Skype's prominence declined due to the emergence of competing platforms like Zoom, Slack, and Microsoft's own Teams. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of these alternatives, leading to a significant decrease in Skype's user base. Microsoft's decision to focus on Teams, which has seen substantial growth and offers integrated communication and collaboration tools, reflects a strategic shift to streamline its services.

To facilitate the transition, Microsoft is encouraging Skype users to migrate to the free version of Teams. Users can log in to Teams using their Skype credentials, with contacts and chat histories automatically transferred. For those with paid Skype subscriptions or credits, these will remain active until the next renewal period, after which the Skype Dial Pad will be accessible through the web portal and within Teams.

Meta plans to launch a standalone AI chatbot app in the second quarter of this year, aiming to compete directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT. This move is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's strategy to position Meta at the forefront of AI development. The upcoming app will build upon Meta AI, the company's digital assistant introduced in 2023, which is currently integrated into platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. In response to Meta's announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman humorously remarked on social media, "ok fine maybe we'll do a social app," hinting at potential future developments from OpenAI in the social media domain. This exchange underscores the intensifying competition in the AI industry, with major tech companies striving to innovate and capture user engagement through advanced AI applications.

Apple's ambitious overhaul of Siri, integrating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities under the "Apple Intelligence" initiative, has encountered significant delays. Initially slated for release with iOS 19.4 in 2026, the fully modernized, conversational version of Siri is now expected no earlier than iOS 20, potentially arriving in 2027.

The company plans to introduce an interim upgrade utilizing large language models (LLMs) in iOS 18.5, expected in May 2025. However, this version will operate separately from the existing Siri framework and may not function seamlessly.

Challenges contributing to these delays include developmental setbacks, equipment shortages, and internal issues within Apple's AI department, such as ineffective leadership and staff departures to competitors. These obstacles have hindered Apple's ability to keep pace with rapidly advancing AI technologies.

Competitors like Amazon are also facing challenges in upgrading their AI assistants but appear to be further along in their development.

Apple's phased approach to rolling out AI features reflects the complexity of integrating advanced AI into existing systems while maintaining reliability and user trust. Despite these delays, the company remains committed to enhancing Siri's capabilities to provide a more natural and context-aware user experience.

Apple has introduced the 11th-generation iPad, featuring notable enhancements over its predecessor. The new model is powered by the A16 Bionic chip, delivering a 30% performance boost compared to the previous A13 chip. Additionally, the device's RAM has been increased from 4GB to 6GB, facilitating improved multitasking capabilities. Storage options now start at 128GB, doubling the base storage of the prior model. Despite these upgrades, the new iPad does not support Apple Intelligence, as this feature requires a minimum of 8GB RAM. The 11th-generation iPad is available for pre-order starting at $349, with shipments commencing on March 12.
